Walking distance from downtown Rochester, you'll find the Susan B. Anthony neighborhood a wonderful eclectic residential pocket in the City of Rochester. The presence of the Susan B. Anthony house provides the neighborhood with a history that is nationally renowned and the revival of the area today provides a rich, historical and interesting setting as an urban  residential neighborhood.

Not much different then when Susan B. Anthony cast her famous vote on Main Street in 1878, the neighborhood houses and buildings represent a rich collection of architectural styles. Susan B. Anthony Square, an Olmsted Brother's designed park, serves as a focal point for the area.

The preservation of the Madison-King area represents the safeguarding and enhancing of a significant section of American History, as well as the enriching of a physically, socially and economically balanced urban neighborhood. Our neighborhood association is devoted to promoting the significance of this historic neighborhood, its cultural diversity, and preserving the unique mixture of architectural homes and buildings within the neighborhood. Our active association supports many community activities and is excited about the home-owners who are preserving one of Rochester's historical neighborhoods and the revival taking place in and around the neighborhood.

Enjoy taking in the character, history and flavor of historic Rochester, as well as the Rochester of today working to preserve it's history.

Who are we?

The Susan B Anthony Neighborhood Association Inc. is a diverse, all volunteer, not-for-profit organization. Formed in 1983, our Neighborhood Association looks to preserve and maintain the 19th century look and feel of our district while improving the quality of life for both residents’ and business owners’ alike. This district is one of Rochester’s oldest and has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places, by the United States Department of the Interior, since 1985.

Where are we?

The Susan B. Anthony neighborhood is a thriving neighborhood of home owners preserving Rochester’s history. The district encompasses a three-and-one-half block area comprised of industrial, commercial and residential buildings. The center of the residential area is Susan B. Anthony Square, a .84 acre park shown on city maps from 1839, and provides a rich focal point for both residents and our visitors. The larger-than-life statues located in the center of the park named, " Let's Have Tea", are bronze figures of Frederick Douglass and Susan B Anthony, created by artist Pepsy Ketavong, in 2001.

Our active Neighborhood Association holds its meetings the 2nd Wednesday of the month at 7pm, in the Susan B Anthony Carriage House, 19 Madison St. Our meetings are open to the public.

What we do?

The preservation of the Susan B Anthony Preservation District represents the safeguarding and enhancing of a significant section of American History, as well as the enriching of a physically, socially and economically balanced urban neighborhood. Working with our city officials, local residents and businesses through sensitive development, we continue to maintain our unique architectural styles of homes and buildings within our preservation district while maintaining our historic sense of place.
